 Today, rain with intermittent periods of sun.The clouds will be mid to high level.

The winds will be light and variable. Mostly southerly at 5 to 10 mph or less. 

Seas are moderate at 1 to 3 feet. Winds and seas may increase later.

The large low pressure system which has formed over the Western Caribbean (Fig 1)

 is now given a 80% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone in the next 

48 hours.(Fig 3)  It has been designated 96L. Early this morning, it was located at 

19.N x 85W or about 211 miles NNE of us. (Fig 2) It has been drifting rather 

erratically north of us. (Fig 4) It is forecast to resume moving north across Cuba.(Fig 5)

In the meantime, a cold front is moving across the Gulf of Mexico and is forecast to 

reach the Yucatan Peninsula early Tuesday. (Fig 1) If this front is strong enough to push 

further south, we should see more rain and northerly winds later on Tuesday or 

Wednesday.

A second low pressure area is forecast to develop in the Western Caribbean on 

Friday.

All interests in the Bay Islands should monitor the status of these systems.

Remember, we still have October and November to go before the hurricane

season is over and ocean temperatures remain at historic highs.

The air temperatures will be in the mid to high 80s (F) or 27 - 29 (C).

Ocean water temperatures are about 85F to 87F or 29C to 30C.

Coral Spawning Alert

There is a low probability that another coral spawn will occur for the next three (3) nights, Tues., Sept. 28 thru Thurs., Sept. 30, 2010.

Coral spawning was observed here in August during a similar time frame.  Brittle stars, sea cucumbers and sponges were also observed spawning on nights when the coral spawned.

A coral spawn has been predicted for Bonaire for this month.

To the best of my knowledge spawning events have not been observed and reported for the month of September in the Bay Islands.

The most likely times for it to occur are between 8pm and Midnight, when the tide has peaked and is beginning to go out.

Please try to note the depth, water temperature and species, if you observe any spawning behavior.
