92L became Tropical Storm Karl at 1500 pm LT yesterday. It continues to move WNW at 10 to 15 mph. At 0300 am LT, it was centered about 150 miles, due north of the Bay Islands. During the night, it did slow down and wobble slightly, as it moved westward. It also intensified. Maximum winds are 65 mph with gusts to 75 mph. The minimum pressure was 991 millibars or 29.25 inches of mercury. It will make land fall on the Mexican, Yucatan peninsula later today.
It is predicted to cross the Yucatan Peninsula and strengthen again in the Gulf of Mexico. Fortunately, Karl is not a very intense storm, but it is a very large one. Consequently, this feature will continue to influence our weather for the next several days.
For today, expect most sunny skies with high level cloudiness. The seas are presently calm. Waves later today will be 1’ to 3’ in height. Winds will remain light at 5 to 15 mph. They will be variable in direction. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are still possible. Expect wind and seas to be locally higher near squalls and thunderstorms.
Elsewhere in the tropics:
Hurricanes Igor and Julia remain in the open waters of the Eastern Tropical Atlantic Ocean. Neither system poses a threat to the Bay Islands.
